One of the easiest ways to add flavor to any dish is through the addition of fresh herbs. While not everyone has access or time to grow an outdoor garden, a windowsill herb garden can be a great introduction to gardening and home cooking. The indoor herb garden also provides fresh herbs all year round when cared for properly.

The first thing to consider when putting together an indoor garden is location. A windowsill, particularly southern facing, can be a good choice, but make sure it is not too drafty. How much space to allot will depend on how many different varieties will be growing in the container, and varieties to consider include basil, mint, chives, sage, and rosemary.

Like any potted plant, drainage is an important consideration as too much water will cause the roots to rot and mold. Planting from seeds can be more difficult than buying young plants, but is cheaper and allows for greater variety in species. Planting young plants from a nursery can be easier for beginners. It also allows for a quicker yield.
